Diversity and Social Justice (Series)
Colleges and universities offer courses focused on diversity and social justice as part of the required general education curriculum in which students fulfill general education goals like critical thinking and knowledge of complex social issues. These courses deepens understanding of society, identity, group dynamics, oppression, and the various disciplines that address social issues across the humanities and social sciences (e.g., history, sociology, psychology, and political science). The learning objectives of this series of mini-courses in Diversity and Social Justice are: first, to provide an opportunity for students to think about the dominant stories and assumptions constructed along group lines (e.g., race, class, gender, and ability) that govern our everyday understanding of the world and our place in it, and second, to provide exposure to college-level scholarly materials and the deep reading, writing, and critical thinking skills required to master them. – All in a supportive and encouraging environment. Each course is 4 weeks long (except for Diversity and Social Justice 203: Sexism, Heterosexism, and Trans* Oppression, which is 8 weeks) and is designed to allow students to take the entire series or to choose topics of interest. The following courses will be offered this fall:
